Riding Hwy 1 in California

Have you ever ridden down Hwy 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles?  What was it like?  What was the car traffic like?

Also once you get to LA how do you get yourself down to San Diego.

Since I am not from California, I am a little unsure of the best time to attempt this ride.  I was thinking May/June, is this a good time to ride to avoid rain?
