Why Would Anyone Ride One

Okay, call me a jerk, but why in the hell would anyone ride one of these stupid looking bikes.
Other than having some kind of bad back or some such thing, they seem completely weak.
Please, please give me a good reason, because I have searched the internet and have not found one yet.

although not good hill climbers, suicidal in cities, they do go very fast down and on the flat as aero resistance is most of the work you do at speed. And if you have a few bikes and cycle a lot, its great to be able to cycle in different positions sometimes.

You can pedal them for looooong distances with less work than a diamond frame. You can get up to higher sustained speeds due to lower wind resistance. A local bike shop owner was sustaining 30+ pretty easily on a recumbent.
Still, my back would have to be pretty screwed up before I started using one.
